2014 Yonex Welsh International - Day 2

Gordon Thomson - WINT 2014

Day 2 of the Yonex Welsh International and the 3rd qualifying round of Men’s Singles and the Main Draw.

In the Men’s Singles the top 4 seeds all moved through to the round of 16 but top seed, Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen, had a very tough match against Malaysia’s Beryno Jiann Tze Wong, eventually coming through in 3 sets 22-20, 15-21, 21-16 but 5th seed, Poland’s Michal Roglaski, was beaten by Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees in 2 sets. Merrilees was joined in the next round by fellow Scot Gordon Thomson who continued his good run with a 3 set victory over England’s Sam Parsons. The longest  match of the day was 6th seed Jan Frohlich’s 3 set victory over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen in an epic encounter lasting over an hour. Welsh no 1, Dan Font ,was unable to progress losing in 2 sets to England’s Alex Lane.

In the Ladies’ Singles the top 4 seeds all moved safely through without dropping a set. Welsh no 1, Carissa Turner, enjoyed a superb 2 set victory over the 7th seed, Finland’s Nanna Vainio and Jordan Hart also moved into the round of 16 with an excellent 3 set win over Scotland’s Julie MacPherson but Aimee Moran was unable to progress losing in 2 tight sets against 6th seed, Jana Ciznarova (18-21, 19-21). Turner now faces England’s Lydia Jane Powell and Hart has a tough ask against 3rd seed, England’s Fontaine Chapman.

Jordan Hart - WINT 2014

In the Men’s Doubles the new Welsh pairing of Nic Strange and Oliver Gwilt progressed after beating England’s James Lauder and Andrew Wainwright and will now face another English pair, 5th seeds Gary Fox and Ben Stawski. 3rd seeds, Ireland’s Tony Murphy and Tony Stephenson were beaten in 3 sets by England’s Robert Golding and Victor Liew.  

The top seeds in the Ladies Doubles are not in action until today but they were joined in the last 16 by the Anglo-Welsh pairing of Kerri Scott and Aimee Moran who defeated England’s Evie Burbidge and Lexi Gilders 21-14, 21-13 and will now face another English pair, Jessica Hopton and Lydia Jane Powell.

In the Mixed Doubles the 2nd seeds from Canada, Phillipe Charon and Phyllis Chan, were beaten by England’s Sean Vendy and Lydia Jane Powell. The Welsh brother and sister pairing of Oliver and Emily Gwilt enjoyed a 2 set victory over England’s Max Flynn and Elizabeth McMorrow but Nic Strange and Jordan Hart were unable to progress losing in 2 sets to 5th seeds, England’s Oliver Baczala and Victoria Williams. The Gwilts now face 4th seeds, England’s Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore.

Today sees the rounds of 16 and 8 and we look forward to some very exciting encounters.
